Ronidazole is an antiparasitic drug from the nitroimidazole group used in animals against protozoal infections. It is most active against Trichomonas spp.
Indications
- Cats: treatment of Tritrichomonas foetus infection
- Pigeons and ornamental birds: treatment of trichomoniasis (Trichomonas gallinae)
- In selected cases — off-label use under veterinary supervision for other protozoal infections
For giardiasis (Giardia spp.), it is not a first-line treatment and should only be used based on a veterinarian’s decision.
Administration and dosage
Dosage and treatment duration depend on species and diagnosis and must be prescribed by a veterinarian.
General references:
- Cats: ~30 mg/kg once daily for 7–14 days
- Birds: 3–7 days depending on body weight
- Dogs: off-label use only under veterinary supervision
